NPC ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Nicholas Dennard

Today’s NPC Athlete Spotlight is Nicholas Dennard NPC Competitor

My name is Nicholas Dennard and I believe in fitness! I’m 25 years old, a Marine Veteran of the Iraq war, a business student, and NPC athlete aiming to capture my pro card. I’ve been active since I was a child and grew up mainly in Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan since my Dad was a Marine. I was always the skinniest kid in school and even wrestled at 115 lbs. during my senior year in high school. I started looking at magazines and going to the gym at 16 and even had black and white magazine cut-outs of Arnold in my locker.

In 2005, I enlisted in the Marine Corps as an infantryman and learned how sheer willpower and mind-over-matter determination can push my body beyond what I thought was its limits. During my downtime in Iraq, I started lifting weights more often and started seeing some changes in my body… and so my love for weight training grew. I wasn’t the skinniest guy around anymore and that was a good feeling. I loved to see that through focus and commitment, I could do something amazing all by myself; The progress was mine and no one else’s. I began looking at weight training and bodybuilding as an art – the time spent training is the mallet, a proper diet is the chisel and the body is the stone. A chip a day might not be noticeable, but after time, you start to see something beautiful.

I started taking my training serious once I got out of the Marines, learned about my insane Resting Metabolic Rate, and since then, my progress has been stellar. I found a great coach – Shelby McDaniel – and 3 weeks into my new training I won Overall for Men’s Physique at my first show, the NPC Schakbuilt Blue Ridge Mountain Classic. After hearing great feedback from the judges, the audience and my coach, I decided to compete at the NPC National Bodybuilding Championships this November in Ft. Lauderdale! I hope to compete on a professional level soon and to ride this wave as far as it can go! Thanks and Semper Fi!
