IFBB Athlete Spotlight: Pro Figure Competitor Kassie Kemmis

Kassie Kemmis, currently based out of the western part of Montana in Missoula, is originally from the eastern side (Billings), which is where her love of health and fitness began. Always active growing up, she played volleyball throughout middle & high school, in addition to coaching younger girls. When making the decision on where to continue her education, she chose to study Health & Human Performance – Community Health at the University of Montana. During her second year, she began working at a gym in Missoula, which is where she became friends with Lance Fulker, a trainer and competitive bodybuilder. Lance saw her potential and soon suggested that she compete in an upcoming contest in Missoula.
She began training with Lance in January of 2013, but did not end up doing the competition that season. However, she traveled with him to the 2013 NPC Emerald Cup to cheer him on as he competed. She was able to experience that contest along with several more shows during the 2013 season. She gained more knowledge about the sport, while building her physique to the best of her ability, along with tremendous increases in strength. She was now hooked on the sport!
Her first contest was the 2014 NPC Emerald Cup in Bellevue, WA, where she placed 2nd in the Open Figure class & 4th in Open Physique! Kassie was thrilled with the progress that had been made over the that year of intense training. Her high placing in the Figure division helped her make the decision to go right to NPC Nationals that November. Taking just a couple of months off from strict dieting, she continued to train with Lance every day and kept her diet clean. She practiced her stage presentation continuously and improved the necessary parts of her naturally gifted physique.
Kassie and Lance then traveled to Miami, FL at the end of November. Competing in Figure class D, she got first in her class & received IFBB Pro status! Competing at that level was so rewarding for her. Kassie reports that even though so many girls were there competing against each other, there was a genuine camaraderie amongst everyone — this is what she enjoyed most about the competition.
“It’s very frustrating when competitors are not friendly toward each other; like they don’t want each other to succeed. We are all after the same goal, so why not work toward that together? I choose to live my life as a competitor & I love sharing what I have learned with other competitors or others interested in competing. I am continuing to learn, too. It’s upsetting when there is hate & shaming of one another rather than supporting each other. I want EVERY individual to succeed; whether that be in bodybuilding, in your career, in living a healthy lifestyle, in your relationship. There should be more positive people in this world. Instead, our minds go directly to finding something we don’t like. This is also my intentions for competing & promoting the sport in a positive way to get more people have the determination and confidence to get up on stage! I enjoy coaching other competitors & helping females with their posing to help them be more confident.”
As far as Kassie‘s plans for the future? For competition, her plan is always to be better than her previous competition. Of course the ultimate goal, like it is for many other pros, is to compete at the Olympia. She is focusing on improving parts of her physique to help get her there. She is thankful to all of her supporters, friends, and family that continue to support her going after her goals, and looks forward to meeting people at an upcoming show in 2016!
