One was good. The second? Even better.
Phil Heath solidified his place atop the bodybuilding mountaintop with his second straight Olympia win on Saturday night. It wasn’t easy.
Heath had to withstand a two-day onslaught from perhaps the best version of Kai Greene we’ve ever seen. The contest was so close, the judges had to compare the two one final time during the confirmation round – and even then it wasn’t a knockout.
But Heath showed his championships mettle, going after Greene in both comparisons – so much so that head judge Sandy Williamson had to urge the two to hit poses as they engaged in a game of chicken on center stage, each waiting for the other to move first during most of the first callout.
Shawn Rhoden, competing in his second Olympia, continued his banner year by placing third over some of the biggest names in the sport. Dexter Jackson managed to turn back to the clock with his best performance in years and was rewarded with fourth.
Branch Warren placed a disappointing fifth, but wasn’t himself on either night, lacking his traditional hardness and fullness.
Dennis Wolf also came in off his best but still managed to place sixth.
